There’s a blast from the past as Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt just held their own (500 Days of Summer) reunion. It’s got us right in the feels!
Surely you remember their brilliant pairing from Marc Webb’s 2009 movie? (500) Days of Summer followed Gordon-Levitt’s Tom Hansen — an architect and soppy greeting cards writer — as he fell in (and out of) love with Deschanel’s Summer Finn.
The romantic comedy won us all over and was a charming addition to the noughties movie slate. While there wasn’t quite the happy ending you might expect, it hasn’t stopped Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt loving their time filming (500 Days).
Entertainment Weekly reunited the pair to relive some of that magic a whole decade after the movie first hit cinemas. The doe-eyed actor was a bit of a b*tch in (500) Days of Summer as she broke the heart of Gordon-Levitt’s loveable rogue. Describing the movie’s divisive storyline, Gordon-Levitt told audiences that they should watch (500 Days of Summer) with a new perspective.
“I think a really actually fun thing to do is try to watch it and just put yourself in Summer’s shoes the whole time,” he told EW. “This is sort of autobiographical of [co-writer Scott] Neustadter’s life. He explicitly has said this is something that pretty much happened to him—but it’s from his point of view.”
Speaking about Summer’s villainous reputation, Deschanel told the site, “I’m just so surprised when women will be like, ‘I hated your character in that movie!’ I’m like, really? She said everything from the beginning!” She went on to tell Gordon-Levitt how its a good thing that people support Tom over Summer: “But I think it’s also a testament to how, like, adorable you are in the movie. Everyone’s like, ‘What?! Why would you turn him down? He’s so cute!'”
Watch it again. It’s mostly Tom’s fault. He’s projecting. He’s not listening. He’s selfish. Luckily he grows by the end. https://t.co/lEJ8uXlpJw

However, it seems like Gordon-Levitt isn’t so quick to jump on the Tom bandwagon. Last year, the Inception star sparked a debate when he tweeted that it was all Tom’s fault. Whoever’s side you’re on, the movie is still a great (if heartbreaking) tale of love and loss.
Both admit that their off-screen friendship helped (500) Days of Summer become such a hit. At the core, It’s clear that both stars had a blast filming (500) Days of Summer. As well as singing karaoke together in real life, Deschanel revealed how they spent every day dancing and joking in each other’s trailers.
Deschanel is now 39 and Gordon-Levitt is 37, which is hard enough to comprehend on its own. I’ll pretty much always see them as the romantically doomed Tom and Summer.
