Whether you’re feeling a little hungover, under the weather, or just in a CBA kind of mood, chucking on a hoodie and heading out to the local shops can sometimes be the only way to get through the day.
However, did you know there’s an ‘official’ age you’re ‘too old’ to get away with wearing one? We’re not here to discriminate anyone of any age, so please don’t come at me with sharpened blades — I’m just here to report the facts.
According to an article previously published by the Daily Star, 26 is the magic age that you have to put your hoodies away for good. Eeek, that puts me out of the running by a full three years.
27 seems like a stupidly young age to ditch our comfy clothing and take on a life of corporate slavery or shopping in Marks & Spencer for the rest of your days.
The research was conducted by clothing site Style Compare. Founder Jonny Challenger said, “We wholeheartedly support everyone’s right to wear what they like, where they like and when they like, regardless of age. But we conducted this research to gauge perceptions of certain items of clothing and we were particularly interested in hoodies as a symbolic item of youthfulness.”
Challenger explained, “They’re often used to portray adults dressing younger than they should.” — implying that they can give you the appearance of being mutton dressed as lamb.
It turns out that women are more lenient when it comes to our hoodie hopes. While the majority of men asked said they thought we should stop at 24, women suggested people over the age of 29 shouldn’t be seen outside in a hoodie.
We all know that a hoodie can be saviour of your wardrobe. Depending on where you work, you can probably get away with wearing one to the office and no one batting an eyelid or noticing it just came out of a crumpled heap. Don’t want to talk to a co-worker? Simply, pull up your hood and put yourself into your own little world.
Is there really an age hoodies should be banned? If we go with the research, it means Avengers: Infinity War star Tom Holland is ‘allowed’ to wear them, but the rest of his co-stars aren’t. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be kicking Chris Hemsworth out of bed if he was wearing a hoodie.
