Phillip Schofield clashed with a guest on This Morning earlier today over obesity.
Michelle Bell appeared alongside Vanessa Feltz to discuss a controversial Cancer Research UK advert, which has led may to believe obesity is being compared to smoking.
During the debate, Phillip was clearly agitated, which led to an uncomfortable exchange between himself and Michelle…
The news adverts show a cigarette packet with the message: “Obesity is a cause of cancer.” Another slogan on the advert states: “Like smoking, obesity puts millions of adults at greater risk of cancer.”
Michelle said that some people may feel ‘fat shamed’ when they see they adverts. Phillip said: “Loving your body, we do it so much on here, but a lot of the time, it would appear if you are obese, you’ve got your head in the sand.”
He continued to explain that the cost of obesity on the economy now apparently stands at £27billion. Michelle disagreed, saying: “I have issues with those figures.”
Phillip hit back: “You’ve got your head in the sand. You’re a denier.”
Viewers took to Twitter to share their opinions on the matter.
@thismorning with respect Phil has come across as an ‘anti obesity’bully, he thinks he’s perfect in his ‘skinny’ world but his attitude towards obese people and the cost of them to the NHS has made more people feel worthless and depressed.— Kevin Foulsham (@KevinFoulsham) 4 July 2019
‘#people not money’
Loved Phil's face in that #ThisMorning debate 'Is it wrong to compare smoking to obesity?' when he is listening to someone. The Cancer Research campaign is not fat shaming, it is a clear, hard-hitting message. And that woman stating you choose to smoke, you don't choose to eat.— Simon Jansen (@simonjansen) 4 July 2019
@thismorning @Schofe I'm appalled by the new obesity adverts. There is a newly discovered genetic condition called Lipoedema which makes some people store fat on their lower body. Bariatric surgery doesn't work as once its there you can't get rid of it. Thousands have had surgery— Angel Pebbles O (@o_pebbles) 4 July 2019
This comes after The Only Way Is Essex star, Billie Faiers, criticised Phillip recently. She said that she was being interviewed Phil and Holly Willoughby on This Morning when an incredibly awkward moment came up regarding the cost of her lavish wedding.
As you can see from the video above, he confronts Billie with some figures that his team has researched regarding the cost of the hotel she used in the Maldives for her wedding.
Speaking to OK! magazine alongside her new husband, Greg Shepherd, she said that Phil tried to “insinuate that they got the wedding for free”, and that she didn’t want to talk about money.
She said: “I was in shock. Prior to our appearance, I’d been very clear that I don’t talk about money. It’s rude and it’s nobody’s business but ours.”
Billie added: “They were trying to insinuate that we got the wedding for free, which is so far from the truth. We saved for our wedding for years.”
57-year-old Phil asked Billie: “This is the Kuramathi Resort in the Maldives. So we had a look, if you were to stay there next Saturday it would be £650 a night, that would be £4,588 for a week for the superior beach villa,
“The whole week for a 100 guests, £229,000. So you must have got a deal there. £229,000 for your wedding?”
Billie looks extremely uncomfortable, and manages to reply: “No, it wasn’t quite that.”
This comes after Amanda Holden criticised the host, saying that he had effectively ‘stopped’ her from taking over presenting on This Morning while Holly Willoughby was presenting I’m A Celebrity last year.
Amanda reportedly went to ITV’s Kevin Lygo, and complained that “Phillip actively campaigned for Rochelle Humes to get the job despite Amanda being more experienced”.
She apparently claimed that she was told she had ‘got the gig’ prior to Phillip’s apparent concerns.
The Mirror reports that Amanda has used her radio show on Heart to discuss the presenter, once saying that the three things she didn’t want to find in her house were “spiders, flies and Phillip Schofield”. She later revealed that she had texted him to try and bring their argument to an end, but he reportedly ignored her messages.
