People Are Losing It Over The Secret Meaning Of Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’

“Mum, can I borrow your cherry chapstick?”

There’s plenty of hidden meanings in songs that you might not know. From rumours that “Puff the Magic Dragon” is about smoking weed to Bryan Adams’ “Summer of 69” being about sexual positions, there’s a weird history behind all your favourite hits. However, fans are now flipping out over Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl”.

Back in 2008, a relatively unknown Katherine Hudson broke into the mainstream with the chirpy “I Kissed a Girl”. Featuring that colourful music video with Perry embracing seductively rolling around the floor, “I Kissed a Girl” is still played in ’00s nightclubs and gay bars around the world.

While you might’ve thought it’s simply about a girl exploring her fluid sexuality by giving a woman a peck on the lips, it turns out Perry was talking about some VERY different lips!

In case you haven’t sussed by now, “cherry chapstick” is actually a euphemism for a lady’s coin purse. When one of Perry’s KatyCats posted this online, music fans started to lose their minds.

The original post reads, “Me and my friends didn’t even realise there was an alternate meaning to the line ‘I kissed a girl and I liked it, taste of her cherry chapstick’ until we were playing Just Dance and they bleeped out ‘cherry chapstick’.”

The post goes on to explain the difference between the lips you’d put a cherry chapstick on and the cherry chapstick that Perry was referring to. Despite the original post coming from two years ago, it has resurfaced online and blown everyone away with over 26k shares.

This shouldn’t come as much of a shock considering Perry’s comments in 2017. After receiving the National Equality Award at the Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner in Los Angeles, Perry confessed, “I’m just a singer-songwriter, honestly. I speak my truths, and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-size pop songs.” She continued, “For instance, I kissed a girl and I liked it. Truth be told, I did more than that.”

Elsewhere, a quick Urban Dictionary search clears it up even further. I spent many a bored evening searching for rude words you can get away with or strange sexual expressions on Urban Dictionary. According to the site, a cherry chapstick is “an engorged cl***ris reddened from excessive flicking, licking, or rubbing.

So, when you used to bounce around the bedroom to “I Kissed a Girl”, you were actually singing about going down on a woman. Whether you want to tell your mum or grandma next time they’re singing along is up to you. Personally, I’d probably just film them and post it to Instagram.
