It’s no secret that not every on-screen romance can transfer into real life. While Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart eventually ended up dating like their TV counterparts, it turns out The Vampire Diaries stars Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev really hated each other’s guts.
Running from 2009 to 2017, The CW’s supernatural teen drama starred Welsey, Lost’s Ian Somerhalder, and Dobrev. The Vampire Diaries included a complex love triangle between the vampiric brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore and Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert.
While Dobrev was a main character in the first six seasons, she returned (voice only) for Season 7 and a guest role in Season 8.
Stefan and Elena were the show’s first big romance, but it turns out tensions were running high in the early days of the show. Wesley admits the pair were “basically driving each other insane” when they first started filming. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the 37-year-old said:
“When we first started shooting The Vampire Diaries, we totally clashed. We didn’t [get along]. Creatively, it just wasn’t in sync.”
The star confirms what Dobrev said only a few months ago. In an interview with the Directionally Challenged podcast, the actor said she and Paul “despised” working with each other on Vampire Diaries.
Thankfully, Wesley says the dynamic duo now “talk all the time” and have put their differences aside. He continued: “The fans would never have known that. We’re basically driving each other insane and then after a few seasons, we developed this absolute mutual love.
“I actually think my best friendships always come from this evolution. And so now, I just adore her, she adores me and I talk to her more than most of the other cast members.”
After Dobrev’s shocking revelation grabbed headlines, she reportedly text Wesley and said, “Oh my god. I am so sorry!” to check there was no bad blood between them. Well, the sign of a good actor is being able to hide your disdain for your co-starts. Perhaps Katherine Heigl should’ve taken note of that when it came to Grey’s Anatomy.
Despite The Vampire Diaries bowing out in 2017, there’s still a huge fanbase out there thanks to the show’s renewed popularity on Netflix. Still, viewers are going to be shocked that two of the show’s leads couldn’t stand each other. What’s next, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart saying they hated working together on Twilight?
