Modern Family ‘Killing Off Significant Character’ This Season
Modern Family is just one of those brilliant TV shows when you fancy a laugh, but don’t want to dive into the wormhole that is binge-watching. Like don’t get me wrong, you can binge-watch ABC’s Modern Family EASILY, but if you haven’t actually got much time then it’s just 20 minutes of your life for a little bit of a laugh.
If you haven’t seen the show – what have you been doing with your life? Those who are well rehearsed in the series, you can skip this paragraph, but if you haven’t seen the show then I’ll give you a little rundown. It basically follows the life of three families that are all related to one another.
The Dunphy’s, The Pritchetts, and the Tucker-Pritchetts. Jay Pritchett, the patriarch of the series, is the father to Claire Dunphy and Mitchell Pritchett, and it follows the lives of their individual families and how they all blend together. The show is filmed like a docu-sitcom, and in my humble opinion is absolutely hilarious.
They deal with problems that many families come across over the years, whether that be wanting to get out of important but boring family events, birthdays, teen angst, kids going off to college, arguments, and the love that comes with having a huge family – but it’s done in the most comical way possible. Clearly, they’re all doing something write, as the series is currently heading for its 10th season with no sign of slowing down.
However, with long-running programmes there’s always a need to develop storylines, which means that alongside the good must come some hard storylines. After all, you need solid character development to truly make a series last, and to do that you need to introduce shake-ups to the cast. So far, apart from a few side characters, there hasn’t been a proper death storyline covered, but according to producers that’s all going to change very soon, as a ‘significant cast member’ is going to be ‘killed off’ the show in the upcoming season.
Speaking to EW, the show’s c0-creator Christopher Lloyd said: “We’re handling some bigger life events in this season. We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”
While completely understandable, it’s actually a horrific thought, because the family are such an iconic on screen cast that it’s impossible to imagine the show without one of them. Seeing as none of the main cast have been tipped to leave, it’s currently a surprise to just who will be getting the chop, but if it’s someone ‘significant’ then it’s definitely going to affect the family.
He also claimed that the death storyline won’t make the entire series heartbreaking, and that fans need not to worry that they’ll be crying the majority of the time it’s on air, as the time constraints require them to get the story done but naturally let the characters move on with their lives.
“There’s goodwill on both sides to make it happen, but there’s also complicated matters that have to get worked through, and there’s a time constraint on it, because we can’t have it take too long,” he told the publication.
“I’m hoping that that doesn’t make the whole thing go away, but I think there’s a decent chance we’ll see it happen. I hope there is. From our standpoint creatively we’ve gotten excited writing this season and changing the lives of the characters — some in a significant way — and it’s made us think, ‘Wow, there’s a lot to explore in the lives of these characters.’ They’re in many ways such different characters than they were five or 10 years ago when we started and they’re just as interesting and just as funny. So our standpoint was, ‘Well, if we can do another season, we may as well. I’m hoping that we have some news on that [soon], and if it winds up that we tried and just couldn’t make it work, we will have a great final season for sure.”
While many of us will jump to the conclusion that it could be Jay (which would be a TRAVESTY), my bet is on Phil’s dad. Still, seems a bit brutal considering Phil also lost his mum on the show, so it also feels very obvious to choose him as the character leaving. Either way, it’s going to make for a few very difficult episodes to watch.
