It’s official, the Twitterverse has found a new king. One Japanese billionaire’s tweet has become the most retweeted of all time.
Forget the musings of Donald Trump or Kanye West, Yusaku Maezawa has just taken over social media in a big way. There’s sure to be a few things we can learn from Maezawa, so what’s his secret?
Known for founding online clothing retailer, Zozo Inc, the 43-year-old posted a simple tweet on January 5. He probably didn’t expect that it would be retweeted over four million times in just a matter of days.
Translated from Japanese, Maezawa’s tweet reads, “Zozotown Spring Sale is the fastest in history and topped 10 billion yen!! With a daily appreciation, I will give 100 million yen (total of gifts million yen) in cash.”

It all sounds pretty tempting. Some quick maths reveals that 10 billion yen is around £725,000 — not bad for the click of a button. Of course, the secret was offering a cash incentive to retweet his wise words. The tweet continues, “The only way to apply is to follow me and RT this tweet. The reception is up to 1/7. I will direct DM the winner!”
The cash prize will apparently be shared between 100 lucky winners. It’s not quite £725,000, but £72,500 is more than enough reason to head to Twitter.
Maezawa is basically the Willy Wonka of the billionaire world and is known for being eccentric. As well as making a name for himself in punk band Switch Style, he is also the first man scheduled to be flown around the Moon by Elon Musk’s SpaceX — beat that Richard Branson.
Maezawa has toppled previous winner Carter Wilkerson’s tweet from 2017. Wilkerson is an uberfan of chicken nuggets (good taste Carter) and asked fast-food chain Wendy’s how many retweets he’d need to win a year’s free supply.

Wendy’s threw down the gauntlet and demanded a jaw-dropping 18 million retweets. Carter only managed 3.5 million, but still got his free nuggets anyway.
Before that, Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded selfie was the most retweeted moment in the Twitterverse. Congratulations Mr. Maezawa, we’d get you a medal, but we’re pretty sure you’ve already got a few knocking around.
