There’s sad news for fans of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter series. It turns out that Hagrid actor Robbie Coltrane is now forced to use a wheelchair after being diagnosed with crippling osteoarthritis.
Best known for playing the loveable Hogwarts gamekeeper in all eight of the magical movies, Coltrane perfectly captured the spirit of J.K. Rowling’s book series and became major part of the Potter movies as the bumbling half-giant.
After being diagnosed with osteoarthritis, Coltrane made a rare appearance in public to promote the new Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike ride at Universal Studios Orlando. The 68-year-old was wheeled out at London’s St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel after being left unable to walk. Despite suffering from “constant pain for years”, Coltrane looked in high spirits while promoting the new ride.
A source told The Sun, “Robbie has been in constant pain for years now, with his knee constantly deteriorating.”
They continued, “It’s left him unable to walk without any assistance and he’s been given a wheelchair while he waits to have a special surgical procedure in America to repair his joint. It’s hugely frustrating for him but he’s really hoping to be back on his feet after getting the operation.”

Are you a bit of a Harry Potter fan? Well last night ALL my HP dreams came true when we got to listen to the brilliant Alan Gilmore, Art Director and creative genius, about the challenges of creating a new, highly themed immersive coaster experience, plus we saw Hagrid IN THE FLESH. The gorgeous Robbie Coltrane, who appeared even though he's currently in a wheelchair awaiting a knee operation, came to tell us loads of secrets about the fab new Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure at Universal Orlando Resort (opens June 24th) 🏍 Come and find out everything you need to know about this brilliant new attraction – plus there's a video from DRACO MALFOY – I mean SRSLY!! #hagrid #rubeushagrid #ishouldnothavetoldyouthat #hagridsmagicalcreaturesmotorbikeadventure #wizardingworldorlando
It’s a sad state of affairs considering Coltrane used to be a staple of our screens. He was last seen in 2016’s National Treasure — playing a television comedian who was accused of raping an underage girl. Even then, Coltrane was seen relying heavily on a cane.
Outside the wizarding world of Harry Potter, Coltrane made a name for himself as the no-nonsense Dr. Eddie “Fitz” Fitzgerald in ITV’s Cracker. He also rose to fame as Valentin Dmitrovich Zhukovsky in GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough. Coltrane has lent his voice to the likes of Van Helsing, Brave, and The Gruffalo.
Speaking at the event, Coltrane said he’s “due a new knee” and promises to be “leaping around like an elf” when he undergoes surgery in the United States. Clocking in at 20 stone, Coltrane has been told he needs to lose an impressive seven stone before doctors will perform the surgery.
While Hagrid has yet to appear in Rowling and David Yates’ Fantastic Beasts, there’s every chance we could eventually see a younger version of the character on our screens. Also, as Daniel Radcliffe reminds fans he’s open to reprising his role as Harry Potter, some of us still hold out hope we could see Coltrane reprise his role as the bearded behemoth somewhere down the line.
