Ben Affleck Loves His ‘Awful’ Back Tattoo, Even If You Don’t

Is it supposed to be a bat?

Ben Affleck may still be one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but that hasn’t stopped the Justice League star getting a bit of flack for his *erm* interesting choice of body ink.

Moving on to pastures new and ditching his Batman cape and cowl from the DC Extended Universe, Affleck was doing the rounds promoting his part alongside Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal in Triple Frontier. It was here that Ellen DeGeneres brought up Affleck’s infamous back tattoo.

When Ellen reminded Affleck that his tattoo has got a lot of attention, Affleck mused, “Not so much positive! It’s a phoenix.” She told the laughing crowd that it’s “rising from your ass.” Chuckling along, Affleck said: “We didn’t plan that, you’re very quick. It’s a phoenix rising from my ass and I was about to say it represents something really important to me but we can skip that.”

While we remain divided and air our own opinions about the impressive portrait, Affleck isn’t too fussed. “It’s meaningful to me, I like it,” he said. “It’s something I kept private I wasn’t doing photoshoots, we were two hours north of the city and didn’t know paparazzi were there. sentiment ran against but I love my tattoo, I’m happy with it.”

Fans first clocked a look at Affleck’s ass phoenix last year — where he originally claimed it was fake and for a new role. However, he’s now ready to fully embrace his artwork and show it off to the world. Either way, Affleck remains defiant against his critics.

It wasn’t all jokes about giant back tattoos you might regret when you’re 80. Affleck discussed his battle with alcoholism and life after his split from Daredevil co-star Jennifer Garner. The pair share custody of Violet (13), Seraphina (10), and Samuel (7), and despite his struggles, Affleck told Ellen he’s in a “great place”.

Talking about how he’s been since he last appeared on the show two years ago, Affleck admitted to Ellen, “There’s temptation to say I get depressed and this was hard and that was hard, or I could be embarrassed but I feel so good now, I’m in a great place, kids are healthy, life is good, so whatever it took for me to get to this place, I’m grateful.”

At least he’s comfortable in his own skin — even if it adorned with a giant phoenix rising from his ass!
